I've lived in both places as well. 

난 두 국가에 다 살아 보았어

The Japanese generally act more, for lack of a better word, 'civilized'. No littering, no tossing cigarette butts onto the side walks, absolutely no spitting on sidewalks or in subway stations (I know it might be a bit of a shocker) etc. 

달리 표현할 말이 없어서 이리말하지만, 일본인들이 더 "문명화" 된 방식으로 행동해. 쓰레기 안버리기, 길가에 담배 안던져놓기, 길이나 지하철에서 침뱉지 않기등등(놀랍겠지만)

The Japanese don't enter the subway like it's some kind of do-or-die situation. They politely, in two single file lines, wait for people to exit before entering. This is one thing that makes Korea stand out among Asian countries in my opinion, as the Chinese and Chinese Hongkongers, and Thais have also figured out how to enter a subway car without looking like desperate peasants fighting for the last ticket to Willie Wonka's chocolate factory. 

일본인들은 이거 못타면 죽겠다는 식으로 지하철에 탈려고 하지 않아. 그들은 공손히 두 줄로 서서 사람이 내리기를 기다려서 타. 이게 한국인이 아시아 국가들 중에서도 특별히 잘 하는 것인데, 중국인이나 홍콩인, 태국사람들도 마지막 초콜렛공장 견학티켓을 잡으려는 것처럼 지하철에 타려하기 때문이야.

Oh yeah, the distinct lack of road noise in Japan is AMAZING. Even in a big city like Tokyo, you can get a hotel right next to a large intersection, and you don't hear a SINGLE car horn honking; not during the day, not during the night. What gives? Is it common decency or something? I've been living in Korea for too long, so small things like this always shock me when I go to Japan. 

그리고 일본 길거리의 대단한 조용함은 놀라워. 동경과 같은 큰 도시에서 교차로에 호텔을 잡아도 낮과 밤중 단한번의 경적소리도 들을 수 없어. 왜 이렇지? 이게 일반적인 예의라거나 그런건가? 난 한국에 너무 오래 살아서 일본에 갈때마다 이런 작은 것들에 놀라.

The Japanese don't shout at one another when they speak on the phone, nor do they shout at eachother when speaking face to face. Old people in Japan don't use the subway system as their own personal living quarters, which is nice. Old people in Korea seem to ride the subway in circles all day long because it offers them free heat or aircon, and a comfortable place to sit while they shout at eachother, or on their cell phones. 

일본인들은 전화통화를 하거나 마주 앉아 대화를 할 때 소리치지 않아. 일본 노인들은 지하철을 자기집 안방처럼 쓰지 않아서 좋아. 한국 노인들은 하루종일 순환선에 앉아있는데 이건 지하철 내부의 냉난방을 즐기며 서로 소리치며 대화를 하거나 전화를 하기 때문이야.

Japanese convenience store food is immeasurably better than in Korea. Fresh, varied, delicious snacks are available. This is one thing that depressed me when I moved from Japan to Korea years ago. I'd enter a large Korean convenience store, and literally find nothing that I wanted to buy. I had pockets full of 500 won coins sometimes, and couldn't find a single thing worth buying, aside from cans of foreign beer. Korean snack food flat out sucks, and the beer.......hah!......I don't even need to mention how beer from the two countries compares. 

일본 편의점은 댈 수 없을 정도로 한국 보다 좋아. 신선하고, 다양하고, 맛있는 스낵이 있지. 이건 내가 일본에서 한국으로 몇년전 이사할 때 슬프게 만들었던 거야. 한국 큰 편의점에 들어가면 정말 살게 하나도 없어. 가끔 500원 동전짜리가 잔뜩 있어도 외국 맥주 빼고는 살 가치가 있는걸 하나도 찾을 수 없어. 한국 과자는 그냥 한마디로 쓰레기야, 그리고 맥주는... 하.... 두 나라를 비교하고 싶지도 않아.

Let's see, what else; the Japanese tend to obey basic laws, including traffic laws (I know this may be shocking to some of you Korean long-termers). The Japanese police appear to ENFORCE laws (also shocking). The sidewalks are all flat and even, which when you think about it, doesn't seem right, considering that (A) Japan suffers from continuous earthquakes, and Korea is basically earthquake-free and (B) Construction of one of Korea's largest industries, and yet they cannot manage to get simple sidewalks to line up or flow smoothly? What gives? Road are also smooth in Japan (honk if you love smooth roads), whereas in Korea, Seoul's roads are in horrendous condition, even in the richest parts of the city, with potholes, uneven pavement, large gaps, random lumps etc. 

글쎄 뭐가 또 있나. 일본인들은 교통신호를 포함해서 기본적인 법을 더 지키는 경향이 있어(한국 오래 산 사람에게는 충격일 거야) 일본 경찰들은 실제로 단속을 하는 것같고(역시 놀랍지) 보도블럭은 전부 평평하고 고르게 되어있는데 생각해보면 이상한게 (1) 일본은 지진이 잦지만 한국은 사실상 지진이 없고 (2) 건설업은 한국의 주요산업중 하나인데 단순한 보도블럭하나 똑바로 못깔고 있기 때문이야. 왜 그럴까? 도로 또한 일본은 부드러워(부드러운 도로를 좋아한다면 호응 한번) 반면 한국 서울 도로는 최악의 상태로, 가장 잘사는 지역에서조차 땜질과 불균형한 높낮이, 큰 구멍과 예측안되는 방지턱으로 가득차 있어.

The Japanese don't wear tacky, shiny, sharkskin business suits. They seem to put more effort and pride into their appearance (well, at least the men do). 

일본인들은 촌스럽게 반짝이는 은갈치 양복 안입어. 그들은 옷입는 데에 더 많은 노력과 자부심을 갖고 있는 것 같아(최소한 남자들은)

Shopping is much more varied and interesting in Japan. They have more international brands, and though their income is generally higher than in Korea, the Japanese don't seem to pay much more for consumer goods. In fact, Korean department store prices are often times higher than Japanese department store prices, which boggles the mind. Variety is the keyword when it comes to shopping in Japan. Huge variety. Something for every taste. It doesn't feel plastic, cheap and cookie cutter like shopping in Korea does. 

쇼핑은 일본이 훨씬 다양하고 재미있어. 일본에 더 많은 국제적인 브랜드가 있고, 한국보다 더 높은 소득수준을 갖고 있지만, 소비재는 한국보다 별로 더 많이 비싼거 같지 않아. 사실 한국 백화점의 가격은 말도안되지만, 일본 백화점보다 비쌀 때가 많아. 일본 쇼핑의 최장점은 다양성이야. 엄청나지. 모든 취향에 맞는 제품이 있어. 인조적이고 싸보이고 다똑같아 보이는 한국에서의 쇼핑같지 않아.

The food? LOL. Hands down, an irradiated piece of sushi served on a clean plate in a restaurant without anyone shouting on their phones, or any screaming children beats out nearly every Korean dining experience. Two of the highest rated (Michelin Starred) Korean restaurants in the WORLD are in Tokyo for Christ's sake. The Michelin people have been "invited" by the Korean government, and responded with a "you don't need to invite us; we'll come when we see fit" letter. So according to the people who write about food for a living, and publish the worlds definitive food guide, Japan even has better Korean food than Korea does, but to be fair, environment and atmosphere play into it quite a bit. You can have decent food, but if the restaurant is crammed with scream brats, or middle aged hags shouting at eachother, they can't expect very high ratings, can they? 

음식? ㅋㅋㅋㅋ 상대가 안돼. 조용한 일본에서의 방사능 오염된 스시 한접시가 전화에다 대고 소리지르고, 우는 애들이 있는 한국에서의 어떤 식사보다 식사 더 좋은 경험을 제공해. 전세계에서 가장 높이 평가 받는 (미슐랭 별 받은) 두개의 한식당은 도쿄에 있어. 한국정부에서 미슐랭을 초청한적이 있어. 미슐랭에서는 "우리 초청 안해도 돼. 필요하면 우리가 가" 라고 답신했지. 말인즉슨 세계에서 가장 뛰어난 음식 가이드로 먹고사는 사람들에 의하면, 일본이 한국요리에 있어서도 한국보다 낫다는 거야. 좀 더 공정하게 말하면, 먹는 환경과 분위기도 여기에 상당히 영향을 끼치겠지만. 괜찮은 음식을 먹을 순 있어도, 만약 그 식당이 시끄러운 애기드로가 서로 소리치는 중년으로 가득차 있으면 좋은 평을 받을 수 없겠지?

Japanese apartments, for the most part, do not look like dilapidated soviet area housing blocks with cracks in the walls. People don't ride motorcycles on the sidewalk in Japan. Apple and Ikea were able to enter the Japanese market without the peasants crying and the government trying to hinder their entrance. Apple can (gasp) own their own stores in Japan, and so does Costco (which is partially owned by Samsung in Korea). The Japanese seem proud of their culture, while at the same time happy to be living in a modern society. The Koreans seem ashamed of their culture, except for a few handpicked nuggets that the K-government plugs on "Visit Korea" TV shows, and which Koreans have been taught to be proud of. Korean women seem to suffer from lower self esteem than women in Japan, hence the astronomical rates of plastic noses, chins, and shaved jawlines and giant fake cartoon character eye surgeries in Korea. I've never been to another country where the women hated their natural appearance so much, and did their absolute best to remove the distinctive ethnic features they were born with. I've also never seen an ad for a plastic surgery clinic on the side of a bus in Tokyo. 

일본 아파트는 벽에 금이가서 다 쓰러져가는 소련시대 주거지역처럼 보이지 않아. 일본에선 사람들이 보도에서 오토바이를 타지 않아. 애플과 이케아도 반대하는 사람과 정부의 방해 없이 일본시장에 들어와 있어. 애플은 (한숨) 일본에 애플스토어를 가질수 있었고, 코스트코도 마찬가지야(한국에선 일부 삼성이 공동 출자해야 했어) 일본인들은 자신들의 문화에 더 자부심을 가지고 있고, 현대사회에 산다는 것에 대해 즐거워하고 있어. 한국인들은 정부에서 "Visit Korea"로 선전하며 자랑스럽게 여기라는 몇개만을 빼고 자신들의 문화를 수치스럽게 여겨. 한국 여자들은 일본여자들에 비해 낮은 자존감 문제를 갖고 있고, 따라서 엄청난 성형 수술률로 코, 볼, 양악, 우스꽝스러운 만화눈을 위해 수술을 하고 있어. 나는 자기 한국처럼 원래 모습을 이렇게 싫어하고,  동양인 얼굴 특성을 지워내려 엄청난 노력을 하는 나라에 가본 적이 없어. 또한 난 도쿄에서 버스벽면에 붙어있는 성형수술 광고를 본적도 없어.

So what then, does Korea do better? 

그래서 결국 한국이 잘하는 건?

Well....let's see...... 

어디보자...

-Public transportation is cheaper. 

-Prostitutes (and nearly all sexual services) are cheaper. 

-They successfully commit suicide at a high rate. 

-Koreans speak English (much) better than the Japanese, on average. 

-Korea's politicians are better at brawling. 

-Koreans are better at giving and receiving plastic surgery. 

-There seems to be a higher concentration of love motels in Korea. 

- 대중교통이 싸다

- 성매매(를 포함한 성서비스)가 싸다

- 자살률이 더 높다

- 평균적으로 훨씬 더 영어를 잘한다

- 한국 정치인이 더 몸싸움을 잘한다

- 성형수술을 더 잘 주고 받는다.

- 러브호텔이 더 많다

The Japanese seem quite happy with life in Japan. Overall, the Japanese appear to be more wealthy, but less greedy and materialistic than the Koreans. The Japanese spend more money on leisure activities that are intangible, while the Koreans spend more money on mindless, status trinkets that they like to show off to their friends, but that serve no actual use. There are countless "Koreatowns" around the world, but not so many "Little Tokyos", which also re-enforces the notion that the Japanese are more satisfied with life in their home country than the Koreans. 

일본사람들은 일본에서의 삶에 꽤 만족하는듯 해. 전체적으로 일본인들이 더 부유하지만, 한국사람에 비해덜 탐욕적이고 덜 물신주의적으로 보여. 일본인들은 비물질적으로 여가활동에 돈을 쓰지만, 한국인들은 친구들에게 자랑하기 위해 허식적이고 쓸모없는 것에 돈을 써. 세계 곳곳에 "코리아 타운"이 있지만 "리틀 도쿄"는 적은 건, 일본인들이 모국에서의 삶에 더 만족하고 있다는 것을 다시 보여줘.

At the end of the day, it is not really fair to compare Korea with Japan, as the two countries are not at the same levels of industrialization, or even social development. You cannot objectively compare Korea to Japan, without coming off as someone who hates Korea. It's like comparing a Hyundai to a Mercedes Benz, or something. The Hyundai is ok, but it does nothing better than the Benz, aside from being more affordable, nor would one expect it to be any better in most aspects.

결론적으로 한국을 일본과 비교하는 것은 별로 공정하지 않아. 두 국가가 같은 레벨의 산업화나 사회 발전단계에 있지 않기 때문이야. 한국을 혐오하는 것처럼 보이지 않고서 한국을 일본과 비교할 수 없어. 이건 마치 현대를 벤츠와 비교하는 거와 마찬가지야. 현대도 나쁘진 않지만, 더 싸다는 거 빼고 벤츠보다 단 한 개도 나은 점이 없어.
