Casting: John Francis Daley Analyzes \'Bones\'
For more than two seasons now, "Bones" fans have been looking for a way to get Booth
(David Boreanaz) and Bones (Emily Deschanel) to share their deepest, darkest feelings
for each other.
Get ready to love Dr. Lance Sweets.
"I am a very green psychotherapist and I am treating Agent Booth and Dr. Brennan like
they\'re a couple," says John Francis Daley of his character, who makes his first "Bones"
visit on Tuesday (Oct. 23) night\'s episode. "It\'s a couples therapy session, which my
character likes because it\'s a nice change from \'the crazies,\' as he puts it. So I\'m very
new to it and making up theories as I go along, while at the same following strict textbook
diagnostics."
That also means that Daley doesn\'t have to learn the mouthfuls of lingo that pepper the
dialogue for most of the "Bones" actors.
"I think my character believes in what he\'s saying most of the time, but at the same time, a
lot of it is bull," Daley laughs. "So it\'s fun to run to run off interpretations of things and not
exactly have them be entirely accurate. I\'ve done a little bit of research, but at the same
time It\'s fun to be slightly ignorant."
Daley initially signed on only for a four-episode guest arc on "Bones," but he\'ll become a
series regular after the 15th episode, giving the "Freaks and Geeks" veteran a chance to
figure out what Dr. Sweets is all about.
"Honestly, I don\'t really know what his angle is yet," Daley explains. "I know that he wants
them to get along and I think maybe he wants to help unleash suppressed chemistry that
a lot of people at this point are noticing."
He adds, "I think that there\'s a comic element to my character -- the fact that he\'s so new
to it, the fact that he\'s a 22-year-old with these highly trained professionals and basically
telling them what\'s what wrong. It\'s also fun to be a little bit older in this, to play my age,
which I haven\'t done much since \'Freaks & Geeks.\'"
It\'s certain a change of pace seeing Daley playing a confident grown-up, a professional
who shows up to work in a shirt-and-tie and expects his opinions to be respected. The
22-year-old actor remains fresh-faced and seems barely removed from his turns as
inexperienced restaurant workers in both "Waiting" and FOX\'s short-lived "Kitchen
Confidential," plus his memorable central performance as Sam Weir "Freaks and Geeks."
"When I came out here, I was very green and I thought that because a show was good
and people liked it, that would be enough of a reason to keep it on the air," Daley recalls of
his truncated "Freaks" experience. "Obviously I learned about the Nielsen ratings system
after that and my whole idyllic world came crumbling down. At the same time, it\'s also a
challenge to make a challenge that\'s good and appealing to fans and at the same time
manages to find an audience. A lot of the time, it\'s just the luck of the draw."
Daley has made a bit of his own luck recently, selling the comedy "The $40,000 Man," a
he wrote with Johnathan Goldstein to New Line. When he hasn\'t been writing, he\'s
been looking for a new small screen job.
"I\'ve also been looking for a TV gig that\'ll be on TV for more than three episodes," he
cracks. "I think I have a good shot with this one. It\'s a really fun show to be on and from
what I hear, it\'s pretty successful, too, so that\'s a nice change of pace."
