인터뷰를 잘 하는 원칙 같은 게 있나?

무슨 TV프로그램인가?
마큐멘터리(사실에 픽션을 가미한 다큐멘터리), 시트콤, 두 개를 진행 중이다.

함께 일하려던 미국 음반사들의 반응이 좋으면 좋을수록 욕심이 났다. 그래서 모든 계약을
원점으로 돌리고 단독으로 투자하게 된 거다. 사실, 임정희가 잘 안되면 미국 지사는 돈이 없다.
하지만 난 자신 있다.

투자금액의 얼마나 되나?
초기 투자가 5억이다. 음반이 나오기 시작하면서 투자할 금액이 그 정도다. 지금까지 들어간
돈은 그보다 훨씬 많다. 미국에서의 생활, 건물임대, 레슨, 영어, 용돈까지, 이런 거 다 합치면 꽤 될 거다.

미국에서 4년 있었더니 (음악하는)친구들이 많이 도와줬다.
현지에서 경력이 출중한 사람들로 직접 뽑았다. 그들은 정말 프로였다. 나를 보고, JYP라는
회사를 보고 계약을 하는 게 아니었다. 음악을 듣고 판단하더라.

미국에서 JYP의 무기는 무언가?

판단해서 포기한 일이다. 에이벡스(일본의 연예 기획사)도 테스트하다가 포기했었다.

일전에 TV프로그램을 통해 뉴욕사무실을 봤다. 그런데 벽면에 박진영 사진만 많이 붙어
있었다. 전략인가?
아니다. 모든 기획사를 가면 소속사 연예인 사진이 걸려 있다. 내 사진만
걸린 건 당시 한국에서 행사를 위해 제작했던 사진이 공수돼서 우선 붙인 것뿐이다. 당시
원더걸스랑 임정희 등은 제작 중이었다. 설마, 내가 독재자도 아니고, 그런 짓을 하겠나?
지금은 다른 사람들 것도 다 걸려 있다.

원더걸스가 읍반과 음원으로 내는 수익이 모든 수익의 절반 정도다. 비는 1/3 정도가 음반,
음원 수익이었다. 원더걸스는 광고 단가가 아직 낮아서 그런 거고, 비는 광고 단가가

물보다 많이 마신다. 꼭 운동할 때가 아니더라도 갈증이 나면 마신다. 물보다 좋다.

광고 속에서 꾸준히 보인다. 신기할 정도로.
지금은 세 개밖에 없다. 광고 출연료를 뉴스에서 날 정도로 받는 가수는 대한민국에 여섯
명밖에 없다. 서태지, 비, 보아, 원더걸스, 이효리, 박진영, 여기에 JYP소속(비는 독립했지만)
이 세명이나 된다. 이미지를 중시한 전략 때문인 거다. 나는 이미지를 중시한다. 춤, 노래는
물론, 옷이나 말투, 걸음걸이까지도 이미지와 관계된다. 가수를 만들 때도 나는 이런 걸
요구한다. 이런 이미지가 있어서 광고도 잘 들어오는 거 같다.

이번 파워에이드 광고는 어떤 이미지가 맞았다고 생각하나?
무엇보다 스포츠 같은 일상을 포착하는 광고 컨셉트가 마음에 들었다. 내가 그런 사람이라는 걸
이번 기회에 발견하기도 했다. 나는 열정을 갖고 도전하고 경쟁하고 이기는 걸 좋아한다. 마치
스포츠맨처럼. 이런 나의 생각과 파워에이드의 이미지가 잘 맞았다. 게다가 광고를 제작하는
모든 스태프들이 익숙했다. 손발이 잘 맞았다.

조만간 물에 빠지는 장면을 찍어야 한다. 수영은 잘 하나?
문제 없다. 초등학교 때 풀장에서 살았다. 접영까지 완벽하게 한다.

어떤 운동을 잘 하나?
농구. 보는 것도, 직접 하는 것도 농구를 잘 한다. 농구를 보는 건 ESPN의 해설자보다 잘 한다.
거기서 힘을 얻고 아이디어도 얻는다. 힘들 땐 마이클 조던 DVD를 본다. 농구도 잘 하고 축구도
잘 한다. 달리기도 고등학교에서 제일 빨랐다. 미국에서(초등학교 시절 2년 반 동안)도 운동과
음악은 잘 했다. 주로 흑인들이 잘 하는 건 잘 했다. 미술은 너무 못했다. 동그라미도 제대로
못 그린다. 그래서 그런 건지, 미술하는 사람들과 예전부터 잘 통했다.

왜 미국에 살게 됐나?
아버지가 동부건설에 미국 주재원으로 2년 반 정도 계셨다. 거기서 흑인 친구들을 많이 만났다.
그냥 그들이 좋았다. 농구하고, 미식축구하고, 길거리에서 춤추고, 나쁜 짓은 안 했다. 길거리
에서 붐박스 들고 소란스럽게 하는 게 내가 했던 최고의 나쁜 짓이었다.

미국 음악을 고집했던 이유를 좀 알 것 같다. 시장성과는 상관이 없는 거였군.
난 한 번도 시장성을 보면서 노래를 만든 적이 없다. 내가 좋아하는 걸 시장성 있게 만들 뿐이다.

그럼 한국적인 소리는 안 좋아했나?
중학교 때 사물놀이에 미쳤었다. 그리고 음악에 접목한 적도 있다.

한국적인 것을 대중음악에 접목시키는 건 어떻다고 보나?
어울리면 넣는 거다. 사명을 띠고 하는 건 아닌 거 같다. 음악은 정치나 역사가 아니다. 우선
즐거워야 하기 때문이다. 국가적인 소명의식과는 거리가 멀다. 난 흑인 음악이 좋다. 즐겁다.
춤을 좋아해서 그런 거다. 춤을 추기엔 역시 흑인음악이다. 음악에 대한 사랑보다는 춤에 대한
사랑이다. 초등학교 입학 전에도 어머니가 쌀을 씻고 계시면 그 소리에 맞춰 춤을 췄다고 한다.
나는 음악이 곧 춤이다.

몇 년 전부터 물어보고 싶었던 질문이다. 가수 박지윤에 대한 거다. JYP에서 가장 잊혀진
프로젝트다. 박지윤에게 섹시 컨셉트는 무리였다고 생각했다. 그녀의 청순한 이미지가 단숨에
반전되어서 당황스러웠다.
지윤이가 나를 찾아와서 시작된 일이다. 나는 그보다 한참 전에 지윤이에게 \'소중한 사랑\'이라는
예쁜 곡도 써줬었다. 지윤이가 찾아와서 내게 들려준 건 알리야의 노래였다. 알리야는 너무나
섹시한 미국 흑인 가수다. 뮤직비디오 찍으러 갔다가 비행기 사고로 죽기는 했지만, 당시 내가
본 지윤이의 끼는 말도 못할 정도였다. 자기가 그걸 펼쳐 보이고 싶은데, 하는 방법을 몰라서
나를 찾아온 거다. 나는 처음에 거부했다. 얼마를 망설이다가 함께 하기로 했고, 1년 반을 가르
쳐서 박지윤의 새로운 이미지를 만들게 됐다. 성인 이미지였을 뿐인데, 한국이 당시 보수적이어서
그게 충격이 됐고, 야한 여자가 된 거다. 흑인음악은 기본적으로 섹시하다. 정중앙에 섹스가 있다.

그게 문제였던 것 같다. 섹시했던 것.
지윤이는 벗은 적이 없다. 느낌이 그런 것뿐이다. 옷도 다 입었다. 성인식은 반 성인, 반 소녀다.
지윤이는 야하기만 한 여자가 아니었다. 성인식은 미묘한 조합이다. 화장 안 한 얼굴에 립스틱.
그렇게 반 성인, 반 소녀를 표현했고 너무 야하지 않은 가사를 노래했다. 지윤이는 그때 성인이
되기도 했다. 당시는 아무 문제가 없었다. 그런데 이런 컨셉트가 보수적인 한국에 충격이 됐다.
이후 남장 컨셉트를 만들 때는 대립이 생기기도 했다.

섹시 컨셉트는 여자 가수한테만 있는 무기다. 그런데 그 무기는 한 번 쏘면 다시 채울 수 없는
1회용 무기라는 게 문제다. 그래서 섹시 컨셉트를 소모적이라고 말하는 거고.
그건 잘못된 생각이다. 무슨 컨셉트인가가 중요한게 아니라, 완성도가 중요한 거다. 섹시하다가
소모되어서 도태된 경우는 완성도가 낮아서 소비된 것뿐이다. 섹시한 마돈나, 프린스, 박진영을
봐라. 소모됐는지. 가사와 음악이 사람에게 잘 맞춰져서 디자인됐는지의 문제일 뿐이다. 이별
컨셉트, 사랑 컨셉트, 섹스 컨셉트. 다 똑같은 컨셉트일 뿐이다. 소모되고 지속되는 문제는
완성도다.

JYP는 어떨 때 섹시 컨셉트를 개발하나?
가수에 따라 다르다. 임정희는 섹시 컨셉트로 안 간다. 별도 마찬가지다. 박진영은 계속 섹시하게
간다. 비도, 박지윤도 그렇게 가는 게 맞았다.

수영장 신을 찍어야 하는데, 밖에 비가 오려고 한다. 마지막으로 하나만 묻자. 탐나는 가수가 있나?
물론이다. 보아는 예전부터. 그리고 바비킴, 윤미래, 다이나믹 듀오를 좋아한다. 차에 CD를 두고
들을 정도다. 이 세 팀은 모두 지난 앨범에 작업을 함께했다. 행복했다.
