FROZEN FANDOM ENGLISH REVIEW - TAKE 2

It’s time for another English lesson boys and girls so strap in! Just kidding…. I have translation help this time from Dom and Papago. But thank you to ALL of the amazing, patient people who helped translate in the past!!! I hoped my 덩실 dance challenge video was a decent “thank you” note.

또 다른 영어 수업 시간이다. 그러니 정신 차려! 농담이야.... 이번에는 돔과 파파고에서 번역 도움을 받았다. 하지만 과거에 번역을 도왔던 놀랍고 인내심이 강한 모든 사람들에게 고마워!!! 나는 나의 댄스 챌린지 비디오가 점잖은 "고마워" 노트가 되기를 바랐다.

Another fun weekend has passed and another 1+2 is now under my belt. So of course, it’s time for me to write another English review. I personally want to thank the staff for all of their hard work making sure everyone wore their masks and used sanitizer going in and out of the theater. Also want to thank the organizers for working so hard to make this event happen! We weren’t sure if we would be able to go, much less have 4 seats near each other but luck was on our side and Dom, myself, and 2 of my close friends were able to enjoy this event and feel safe doing so!

또 하나의 즐거운 주말이 지나고 또 다른 1+2가 지금 내 벨트 아래 있다. 그래서 물론, 내가 또 다른 영어 리뷰를 쓸 시간이다. 나는 개인적으로 스태프들에게 모든 사람들이 마스크를 쓰고 극장을 드나드는 세정제를 사용했는지 확인하는 데 모든 노력을 기울인 것에 대해 감사하고 싶다. 또한 이 행사를 성사시키기 위해 열심히 일해준 주최자들에게 감사하고 싶어! 우리가 갈 수 있을지는 확신할 수 없었지만, 훨씬 적은 수의 좌석들이 서로 가까이 있었지만 운이 우리 편이었고, 돔, 나, 그리고 내 친한 친구들 중 두 명이 이 행사를 즐기고 그렇게 해서 안전하다고 느낄 수 있었다!

Dom and I KNEW we would get some attention this round because my last article and our dance video were pretty popular. I had to warn my friends in advance about this but even so, we weren’t fully prepared for the super warm welcome we received. As soon as I appeared at the top of the escalator, “The Real is here!” echoed around the hall. 

돔과 나는 내 마지막 기사와 댄스 비디오가 꽤 인기 있었기 때문에 이번 기회에 주목을 받을 수 있을 거라는 것을 알고 있다. 나는 이 일에 대해 친구들에게 미리 경고해야 했지만, 그럼에도 불구하고, 우리는 우리가 받은 아주 따뜻한 환영에 대해 충분히 준비하지 못했다. 에스컬레이터 꼭대기에 나타나자마자 홀 전체에 "진짜가 왔다!"라고 메아리쳤다.

*Dom has been helping translate some of the comments from Frozen Gallery and one name for me keeps popping up; “The Real.” I don’t feel I deserve this name to be honest but I’m honored to have made such an impact in the fandom that I’ve been given a nickname. Coming up the escalator to shouts of “The Real is here!!!” is a new experience for me. I’m more used to my students groaning when I walk in the classroom for English class.*

Dom conveniently got distracted by videoing other things around us and while we waited for him we started having people from my last showing drop by to say hello. We were a little overwhelmed by people giving us beautiful cards, posters, and candy. 

돔은 우리 주변의 다른 것들을 비디오로 찍어서 편리하게 정신을 잃었고 우리가 그를 기다리는 동안 우리는 마지막 쇼에 참석했던 사람들을 초대해서 인사를 나누기 시작했다. 우리는 우리에게 아름다운 카드, 포스터, 그리고 사탕을 주는 사람들에 의해 약간 압도되었다.

*To the sweet guy who handed out brownies: It was delicious and I wanted to give you something in return! My ultimate weakness is definitely chocolate….. And YES! I did eat the ginseng candy and it was tasty! I did bring small postcards of my own design to hand out to anyone who came to talk to me and I’m happy to say I handed out most of them!*

This is my 4th sing along and my 3rd 1+2 fan event but this was the first time for my two friends to experience this kind of event. We all loved it!!!!! I think my love of the Aurora “Aaaahs” has now extended to my companions since they also cracked up at the wonderful chaos! They also mentioned how impressed they both were at how well everyone sang! There you go: 3/3 American fans say we approve this beautiful chaos!

네 번째 노래인데, 세 번째 1+2 팬 이벤트인데 두 친구가 이런 행사를 경험하기는 처음이었다. 우리 모두 좋아했잖아!!!!! 오로라 "아아아아"에 대한 나의 사랑은 이제 동료들도 그 멋진 혼돈에 금이 간 이후까지 확대되었다고 생각해! 그들은 또한 그들 둘 다 모든 사람들이 얼마나 노래를 잘 부르는지에 대해 얼마나 감명받았는지에 대해서도 언급했다! 여기 있다: 3/3의 미국 팬들이 우리가 이 아름다운 혼돈을 승인한다고 말한다.

One of my friends (call her Cris) is just as big of a nerd as I am. She and I talked about how much this event reminded us of all the conventions we went to in the states and how we wish more events like this happened in Korea. We have both decided to cosplay at the next event we attend~ For the good of the nerdom!! I wasn’t able to pull together a costume for this event due to time constraints. Next time though! 

내 친구 중 한 명(그녀의 크리스를 크리스라 부른다)은 나만큼이나 괴짜다. 그녀와 나는 이 행사가 우리가 미국에서 했던 모든 관습들을 얼마나 상기시켰는지, 그리고 어떻게 한국에서 이런 일이 더 일어나기를 바라는지에 대해 이야기했다. 우리 둘 다 다음 행사 때 코스프레를 하기로 했어~ 얼간이들을 위해서!! 나는 시간 제약 때문에 이 행사를 위한 의상을 만들 수 없었다. 하지만 다음번에는!

My youngest friend (let’s call her Mags) isn’t as big of a nerd as Cris and I are, but she’s studying Korean and enjoyed practicing with the people around us! We enjoyed talking with some wonderful cosplayers and longtime fans of the Frozen movies in between shows.

내 막내 친구(그녀를 매그스라고 부릅시다)는 크리스와 나만큼 큰 괴짜는 아니지만, 그녀는 한국어를 공부하고 있고 우리 주변 사람들과 함께 연습하는 것을 즐겼어! 우리는 쇼 중간에 몇몇 멋진 코스프레 선수들과 프로즌 영화의 오랜 팬들과 이야기하는 것을 즐겼다.

I want to address some concerns that were brought up in comments from my last review. 

나는 지난 번 리뷰에서 언급된 몇 가지 우려 사항을 다루고 싶다.

Q1: Would the foreigners be distured by how hardcore nerdy this “645” event was?

Q1: 외국인들은 이 "645" 행사가 얼마나 무모한 것인지에 대해 불안해 할 것인가?

 A: Trying to out-nerd Americans is literally impossible because we invented the word. I’m exaggerating a tiny bit but my point is no, we were not the least bit disturbed by the level of nerdiness at this event. My friends and I were super excited to be included. Two of us grew up going to similar events since we were teenagers. All of us are involved in fandoms of our own both here and in the states. I hope we will find ways to be more included in the future since we are new to this fandom.

A: 우리가 그 단어를 발명했기 때문에 미국인을 능가하는 것은 문자 그대로 불가능하다. 나는 약간 과장하고 있지만 내 요점은 아니다. 우리는 이 행사의 괴짜 수준에 조금도 동요하지 않았다. 내 친구들과 나는 포함되서 매우 흥분되었다. 우리 중 두 명은 10대 때부터 비슷한 행사를 하면서 자랐다. 우리 모두는 여기와 미국에서 우리 자신의 팬덤에 관여하고 있다. 이 팬덤을 처음 접하는 만큼 앞으로 더 많이 포함될 수 있는 방법을 찾길 바란다.

But events like this are comforting to people like us. All 3 of us are English teachers here in Korea and what initially drew us here was our interest in the culture… well... mostly pop culture, like K-dramas or K-pop. Sadly, we all have to wear “faces” for our schools and students and we don’t get to “show ourselves” and be excited about sharing our passions. Events like the 645 give us that opportunity to connect with people and celebrate what’s fun about being a nerd.

그러나 이와 같은 사건은 우리 같은 사람들에게 위안이 된다. 우리 셋 모두 여기 한국에 있는 영어 선생님들이야. 그리고 처음에 우리를 여기로 끌어들인 것은 문화에 대한 우리의 관심이었어... 음... K-드라마나 K-pop 같은 대중문화는 대부분이다. 슬프게도, 우리 모두는 학교와 학생들을 위해 "얼굴"을 입어야 하고 우리는 우리의 열정을 나누는 것에 흥분하지 않는다. 645와 같은 행사들은 우리에게 사람들과 교류할 기회를 주고 괴짜가 되는 것에 대해 재미있는 것을 축하해준다.

Q2: I want to talk but my English is bad.

Q2: 말하고 싶지만 영어가 서툴러.

A: I will speak mostly for myself here because I’m the one involved but I know for a fact my friends agree with me. These events and fandoms are not meant as judgement platforms. In fact, since all of these events have been for the English showings I am beyond impressed with the skills everyone has! I’m not here to make people uncomfortable or to challenge your English skill. I’m here because for the first time since living in Asia, I feel I am connected to people over something OTHER THAN English. 

A: 내가 관련된 사람이기 때문에 나는 여기서 내 자신을 위해 말할 것이다. 하지만 나는 내 친구들이 나에게 동의한다는 것을 알고 있다. 이 사건들과 팬덤들은 판단 플랫폼으로 의도된 것이 아니다. 사실, 이 모든 행사가 영어 쇼를 위한 것이기 때문에, 나는 모든 사람들이 가지고 있는 기술에 감명을 받을 수 없다! 나는 사람들을 불편하게 하거나 당신의 영어 실력에 도전하기 위해 여기 있는 것이 아니다. 나는 아시아에 살고 나서 처음으로 내가 다른 영어보다 더 많은 사람들과 연결되어 있다고 느끼기 때문에 여기에 왔다.

Personally speaking, it’s exhausting to have “friends” that only want to practice English versus share in things we like. I’d much rather battle the language barrier arguing over whether my hair is blonde and long enough to cosplay Elsa over having to talk about the weather in every conversation because that’s all the Korean I know. Don’t misunderstand, I love teaching my language and I love learning Korean. But my goal is to learn to express myself in the language and to help others be creative with English to express themselves too. 

개인적으로 말해서, 우리가 좋아하는 것에 영어를 연습하는 것과 우리가 좋아하는 것을 나누는 것만을 원하는 "친구들"을 갖는 것은 지친다. 나는 차라리 내 머리가 금발이고 모든 대화에서 날씨에 대해 말해야 하는 엘사를 코스프레할 만큼 길지 않은지 논쟁하는 언어 장벽과 싸우고 싶다. 왜냐하면 내가 아는 한국어는 그것뿐이기 때문이다. 오해하지 마, 나는 내 언어 가르치는 것을 좋아하고 한국어를 배우는 것을 좋아해. 하지만 내 목표는 나 자신을 언어로 표현하는 법을 배우고 다른 사람들이 그들 자신을 표현하기 위해 영어로 창의적이 되도록 돕는 것이다.

I had this amazing conversation with a sweet man sitting next to me. Like a few others I’ve talked to, we chatted about my views on the movies, making comparisons to my other favorite Disney films, and what I hope to see in the future for the fandom. After the 2nd movie, he asked me a legitimate question: What is the 1 word Olaf says to Anna in their conversation before he “flurries away.” (Olaf: Hey, I just thought of something permanent. Anna: What’s that? Olaf: love/hug???) It took a little back and forth for me to understand what his question was but it was fascinating to notice he had been practicing understanding the English rather than reading the Korean. 

나는 내 옆에 앉아 있는 상냥한 남자와 이 놀라운 대화를 나누었다. 내가 얘기했던 다른 몇몇 다른 영화들처럼, 우리는 내가 좋아하는 다른 디즈니 영화들과 비교하면서 영화에 대한 나의 관점에 대해 이야기를 나누었고, 내가 팬덤을 위해 미래에 보고 싶은 것에 대해 얘기했다. 두 번째 영화가 끝난 후, 그는 나에게 정당한 질문을 했다. Olaf는 Anna가 "돌아가기 전에" 그들의 대화에서 무슨 말을 하는가? 이봐, 난 그냥 뭔가 영구적인 걸 생각해냈어. 안나:그게 뭔데? 사랑/허그??) 그의 질문이 무엇인지 이해하는 데는 앞뒤가 조금 걸렸지만 그가 한국어를 읽는 것보다 영어를 이해하는 연습을 했다는 것을 알게 되어 매혹적이었다.

The answer, by the way, is “love.” Because the voice actor is trying to sound tired, his words sound more “breathy” so the “H” sound blends with the “L” making the word sound like “hug.” 

그나저나 대답은 "사랑"이다. 목소리 연기자가 피곤한 소리를 내려고 하기 때문에, 그의 말은 더 "breathy"로 들리므로, "H"가 "L"과 섞여서 "hug"처럼 들린다.

This is a great question to ask! I love answering questions like this because it’s not me correcting someone’s grammar and it opens the door for more interesting conversations. Dom regularly asks me questions about cultural references and recently he asked me about why Anna is pronounced “Ah-nah” and not “Ahn-nah.” The simple answer is American English puts more emphasis on first syllables rather than middle syllables. The “n” is a softer consonant in the English language. Even the Dutch pronunciation of the name softens the middle consonants and English is originally derived from Germanic languages. (Sorry for the English lesson…. Once a teacher, always a teacher…. And language history is just fascinating to me)

이건 정말 물어보기 좋은 질문이야! 나는 이런 질문에 대답하는 것을 좋아한다. 왜냐하면 내가 누군가의 문법을 고치는 것이 아니기 때문이다. 그리고 그것은 더 흥미로운 대화를 위한 문을 열어준다. 돔은 정기적으로 나에게 문화 레퍼런스에 대한 질문을 하고, 최근에 그는 왜 안나가 "안나"가 아닌 "아나"로 발음되는지에 대해 물었다. 간단한 답은 미국영어는 중간음절보다 첫음절에 더 중점을 둔다는 것이다. "n"은 영어에서 더 부드러운 자음이다. 심지어 그 이름의 네덜란드식 발음도 중간 자음을 부드럽게 하고 영어는 원래 게르만어에서 파생된 것이다. (영어 수업은 미안해....) 한번은 선생님, 항상 선생님.... 그리고 언어사는 나에게 매력적일 뿐이야)

But, I digress. I want to conclude this review by again congratulating the wonderful staff who made this event a success. My friends and I had an amazing time and are looking forward to the next one we can go to! 

하지만 나는 주제에서 벗어났군. 이번 행사를 성공시킨 훌륭한 스태프들에게 다시 한 번 축하하며 이 평론을 마무리하고 싶다. 내 친구들과 나는 멋진 시간을 보냈고 다음에 갈 수 있는 시간을 기대하고 있어!

To the community at large: Thank you for being yourselves. For being the silly, shy, adorable, nerdy people that you are and for tolerating my awkwardness. I have felt more welcome at these few events over the past month than I have felt at my school for the past year. These are my honest and open thoughts. To anyone who fears talking to me, take your time but I hope I get to meet you and talk to you too! Until I can speak better Korean, translators are a wonderful thing and I never judge anyone on language skill. Again, that’s not why I’m here! To people who wonder if I’m real, I hope I get to meet you too someday. I know you have reasons for your skepticism and I don’t blame you. To everyone in general, I look forward to learning from you and sharing what I enjoy too. Feel free to ask me any questions, whatever they may be!
