Recall that Teymur Radjabov asked FIDE to postpone the holding of the Candidates Tournament in Yekaterinburg in connection with the coronavirus pandemic. The international federation refused and Radjabov was forced to refuse to participate.

Subsequently, FIDE, after the seventh round, suspended the holding of the Candidates' Tournament after the Russian government decided to cancel international air traffic with the whole world.

In an interview with Sputnik Azerbaijan, the former world chess champion, Russian Vladimir Kramnik, shared his opinion on the situation around the applicants' tournament in Yekaterinburg. By the way, Kramnik received an invitation to comment on the competition, but refused, as he considered it unethical against the backdrop of a raging coronavirus pandemic.

In particular, the Russian grandmaster noted that he also recommended not to hold the applicants' tournament in such conditions.
"In an interview with FIDE officials, I noted that holding a candidates tournament under such conditions is a wrong decision. I also agree with Alexander Grischuk, who in his interview said that holding a candidates tournament under such conditions is the same as a feast during plague, "said Kramnik. He supported the position of Teymur Rajabov, who asked to postpone the tournament.

“The appeal of Teymur Rajabov regarding the transfer of the tournament was correct. In this regard, the truth is on the side of Rajabov. Suspension of the applicants' tournament under such conditions was expected. Now the situation looks rather complicated - FIDE must make a decision that satisfies everyone,” Kramnik said.

The former world champion believes that FIDE should return Teymur Rajabov to the composition of the participants in the applicants tournament.

“I am speaking now as an outside observer. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov or any other chess player could have appeared in the place of Teymur, and I would have the same opinion. Justice should be restored. FIDE should apologize to the contestants and Teymur Rajabov, as well as conduct individual interviews with everyone, ”Kramnik believes.

Kramnik proposed two ways out of this situation..

"This person has done a lot for the development of chess in Azerbaijan and has always been on the side of justice. If FIDE allows him to participate in discussions, he will certainly help. In this case, Mahir Mammadov will defend Azerbaijan’s position as a fair decision," Kramnik added.
