SOENG-JIN CHO AND LAHAV SHANI - FINE SPIRIT MEETS BUNDLE OF ENERGY

What Lang Lang is to China, Seong-Jin Cho is to South Korea. Since Cho became the first Korean to win the Chopin Competition in 2015, he has been a superstar in his homeland. Not only there. On Wednesday he was the soloist in Ravel's Piano Concerto in G major with the Munich Philharmonic. Another young star conducted: Lahav Shani, who also had Berlioz's "Symphonie fantastique" with him.

The two are Berliners by choice and about the same young – but completely different types. Despite or because of that, they harmonize surprisingly well: subtlety meets bundle of energy. Seong-Jin Cho (28) is a slim guy with medium-length hair, which he lets fly in virtuoso passages. When playing, he moves organically and casually, as if he were shaking the most difficult passages off the top of his head. Lahav Shani (33) is a strong guy who doesn't need a staff to grip rhythmically. When conducting, he likes to give the impulses with his elbows and his entire upper body. Powerful but not harsh or patronizing. And with great empathy – the freedom of pace that Cho takes on the piano is translated by Shani with ease for the orchestra.

FASCINATING MIX OF STYLES: MAURICE RAVEL'S PIANO CONCERTO

The Ravel Concerto , one of the great masterpieces of the 20th century and, despite its popularity, underestimated, thrives on a fascinating mix of styles. It contains all the magic of sound of impressionism, but also the then exciting new world of jazz. The late Ravel confidently defies younger colleagues such as Igor Stravinsky, who apparently had long since overtaken Ravel with their radicalism in the 1920s. The many dissonances in the fast movements give sensual pleasure, are addictive and produce happy hormones when listening. And the nostalgic euphony in the slow middle movement is broken and full of melancholy – anything but harmless, anyway. Behind its irresistibly glittering surface, this piece is disturbingly ambiguous and as abysmal deep as a hall of mirrors.

PLAYS IN A SOPHISTICATED, DIFFERENTIATED AND FUNNY WAY: PIANIST SEONG-JIN CHO

Lahav Shani does not rely on impressionistic euphony, but brings out the tonal sharpness and modernism. Sometimes one wishes for a little more sense of sound, but in Shani's reading the piece sounds refreshingly powerful. No Leisetreter Ravel. Seong-Jin Cho doesn't offer that either, but his approach is more sophisticated and differentiated. funnier too. Accents, rhythmic refinements, timbres – the alertness with which Cho creates creates an electrifying pleasure in every bar. Only the very simple, heartwarming melody with which the slow movement begins could be wished for to be simpler.

The encore makes up for it all the more: Debussy's "Claire de lune" unfolds its moonlight magic with a breathtaking sense of sound - and yet completely natural, breathing freely.
