1. Origin of Halloween Day

Let us look at the origin of Halloween

Halloween originated from Ireland’s Celtic Samhain religion  from 2500 years ago believing that a person’s soul can be saved through Samhain when they die, if they have worshipped the spirit of death. The Celtics gave sacrificial worship once a year in order to appease the Samain gods and the worship ceremony took place on October 31^st, which is the last day of their year. The Celtics were a very rough and hardened nation and it is known that they even sacrificed humans for the burnt offering. They would wear black clothing and black hoods at night time, visiting each village with torches and forcefully taking a virgin from each village as they questioned harshly, “Are you going to offer a virgin or die?” Those villages that refused to offer a virgin were burned down entirely.

It is winter and sumer for the most part in Ireland, which is located in the northern hemisphere. October 31^st is considered the end of summer and November 1^st as the beginning of winter. 

The Celtics believed that on October 31^st, the date when summer ends, all sorts of ghosts, demons and evil spirits would come, entering into living persons to be re-born in the following year. For that reason, in order to trick the ghosts and the evil spirits, the Celts would turn off the light s as if no one lived in their house. They would put on animal leather or wear costumes and masks that were scarier than the evil spirits in order to scare them away, and have a bonfire with logs stacked up every night in every village.

Meanwhile around the fourth century when the Roman Empire seized the world, the majority of Europe became states of the Roman Empire and those countries under Roman rule were converted to Christianity. Except for the human sacrifice of the Celtic Samhain worship, all other Samhain traditions were passed on into the Christian church and the ceremonies spread all over Europe through several centuries. In 840 A.D., Roman Catholic Pope Gregory the IV was worried about these bad ceremonial habits spreading, and moved “All Hallows Day” kept from May 13^th to Novemer 1^st to October 31^st to be “All Hallows Evening.” This linked the Roman Catholic day of worshipping the dead and the Celtic Samhain’s religious traditions. They used to call the evening celebration as ‘All Hallows E’en’ and later changed the name to Halloween. This tradition was widespread in America as the Irish and Scottish emigrated to America.

Today, Halloween has settled as the highest holiday for Satan worshippers and every Halloween, Satan worshippers sacrifice animals as the Celts did in the past and even sacrifice humans at times. Many join as they have been deceived and lured by Satan worshippers during the Halloween party.

This Halloween day is completely opposite to the Protestants. On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther wrote documents with 95 Theses against the Roman Catholics, accusing the corrupted state of the Catholics. He posted the 95 Theses on the Catholic church door in Weitenburg, Germany and that day the Religious Reformation began. Through that Religious Reformation, the Holy Bible that was once lost returned back to the hands of laymen and the door was opened for true faith through the Gospel of Christ, leading to salvation. That is why churches have programs for children on Halloween within the church so that children are not influenced with the traditions of the foreign religions and October 31^st can be kept as the “Religious Reformation Day”. (Source - 신광철, ‘할로윈의 유래와 현실’)
