Chapter 78: The usefulness of a visor that can be lifted

78장: 면갑을 올릴 수 있는 투구의 장점

If we know how to parry and our opponent is heavily armored,

만약 네가 무기를 쳐내는 방어법을 알고 있고, 상대가 너와 같은 중장병이면,

it is often useful to have a visor that lifts up so that our breath endures longer and we can see better what to do.

호흡이 편하고 넓은 시야를 가질 수 있도록 면갑을 올릴 수 있는 투구를 쓰는 것이 도움이 된다.

This hardly ever puts us in danger,

이것은 별로 위험하지 않다,

especially if we have iron gauntlets to deflect the opponent's weapon.

특히 네가 상대의 공격을 빗겨 막아낼 수 있는 철제 건틀릿을 손에 끼고 있다면.

But those who fight crudely need to be heavily protected everywhere.

하지만 기술 없이 막싸움을 하는 사람은 빈틈없이 갑옷으로 보호받을 필요가 있다.

Such people act like blacksmiths hammering at each other.

그런 사람들은 대장장이처럼 서로를 두드려대니까.

Long breaths are very beneficial in fighting on foot or horseback,

so we should exercise to develop strong breathing, if it is denied to us by nature.

Chapter 79: Why we have to fight very differently armed heavily in white arms than few arms; and some appropriate blows when knights are heavily armed, whether on foot or horseback.

79장: 무거운 판금갑옷을 입었을 때는 경무장을 했을 때와 다른 방식으로 싸워야 하는 이유, 그리고 중무장한 기사들이 마상전투나 도보전투에서 사용할만한 공격 수단.

Since we are discussing combat with heavy armor, it should be noted that there is a big difference between fighting in light armor and heavy.

중장병의 전투법을 논의하기에 앞서, 경무장 상태의 전투와 중무장 상태의 전투에는 큰 차이가 있다는 점에 유의해야 한다.

With light armor, when we deliver a blow against the opponent or wish to avoid his attack, we can do various thing with our body,

가벼운 갑옷을 입었을 때, 너는 다양한 동작을 취하면서 적에게 공격을 가하거나 적의 공격을 피할 수 있다.

sometimes going forward, sometimes going back, now stepping to one side, now the other; sometimes we bend our body forward or wherever we wish.

But we cannot do this with heavy armor,

for if we lean our body, the armor weighs so heavily to that side that we can easily fall or receive some harm.

지나치게 한쪽으로 몸을 기울이면, 무게가 쏠려서 쉽게 넘어뜨려질 수 있고, 그밖에 다른 공격을 당하기도 쉽기 때문이다.

When we are heavily armored, we must always do one of two things, or both at onece:

무거운 갑옷을 입고 싸우는 동안, 너는 다음의 두 원칙 중 하나를 반드시 지키고 있어야 한다. 아니면 둘 다 지키거나.

first, we must stand and walk upright without leaning our body and always staying over our feet, whether on horseback or on foot,

첫째, 마상전투에서든 도보전투에서든, 항상 허리를 똑바로 세워라.

second, we must always step forward, or else around, but never backward.

둘째, 앞으로 전진하거나 옆으로 도는 건 괜찮지만 절대 뒤로 물러나지 말아라.

In fighting on horseback with heavy armor, we must keep our horse's head toward the opponent,

trying to get him by the side or back, and so that he cannot do the same to us.

And furthermore, and most importantly, we must stand our ground or push toward the opponent,

particularly when the opponent drives his horse over us, since if we do not then collect the reins, or do not press forward as much as possible,

and our horse will easily fall backward or we will eventually be driven from the lists(Line of battle?), and various other disgraces will happen to us.

Therefore whenever the opponent drives his horse toward us, we should drive ours toward him,

and if he throws a blow with a sword, estoc, warhammer, or similar weapon,

If the opponent pushes at us, we should push him back with speed and strength, so that he falls backward.

When we fight on foot wearing the armor called "white armor" in some languages, we should move forwad here and there, staying upright over our feet, and resolving never to step back, for this should be avoided as the ultimate eveil.

판금갑옷을 입고 도보전투를 벌일 때, 너는 항상 허리를 세우고, 전진하되 물러서지 않겠다고 결심해야 한다.

Even if sometimes we can go backward to avoid the opponent's blow or to ready our arms.

Finally, we should move constantly forward, or stand fast if we wish to breathe or rest.

항상 앞으로 전진하고, 휴식할 때는 제자리에 멈춰서 있어야 한다.

But in this situation or some other, if the opponent wants to push us or strike with the point or pommel of his sword,

그런데 그러는 동안 상대가 너를 칼끝으로 찌르거나 칼자루로 후려치려 한다면,

we should crowd against him strongly and speedily, deflecting his weapon and arm with our arm,

너도 즉시, 강하게, 상대의 무기와 왼손을 너의 무기와 왼손으로 받아치고,

and striking him powerfully in the head, chest or elsewhere.

머리나 가슴이나 다른 부위에 반격을 가할 수 있어야 한다.

In this circumstance, whether on foot or horseback, it is often an excellent technique, particularly against weak men,

to fall on the opponent's chest with our left hand or fist, and in the same instant to strike with our pommel on his head,

if the pommel is good and hits with impetus and great impact it delivers damage,

and if the opponent is fighting on foot he often falls.

도보전투라면 맞은 사람이 쓰러질 수도 있다.

If someone tries to deliver such blows against us, we should instantly close with him, pushing him backward,

만약 상대가 너에게 그런 공격을 시도한다면, 즉시 가까이 달라붙어서 상대를 뒤로 밀어붙어야한다.

for when we are close, nobody can deliver a great blow.

가까이 붙어있으면 세게 때릴 수 없으니까.

But here it must be noted that we should be as strong as our opponent, or stronger if possible.

그런데 여기서 유념해야할 것은, 네가 상대보다 힘이 세거나 최소한 대등해야 한다는 점이다.

Otherwise, even a blow with the warhammer, pollaxe, or estoc will do him little or no harm,

그렇지 않으면 워해머, 폴액스, 에스톡으로 찌르거나 후려치더라도 상대에게 거의 피해를 입히지 못할 것이다.

particularly, if he has some skill, against such people we can never deliver great blows because he always deflects it,

특히 너보다 힘센 상대가 기술도 좋을 경우, 그놈은 네 공격을 전부 막아낼 것이다.

or steps in, where we can deliver only a small blow to him,

아니면 네가 강한 공격을 맞출 수 있는 거리를 내주지 않을 것이다.

and such blows mean nothing to someone who is fully armored in white harness.

크게 휘두르는 강한 공격이 아니면 전신 판금갑옷을 입은 사람에게 해를 입힐 수 없는데 말이다.

And if we step back, sooner or later we will be taken, if the opponent is strong and strives to go forward.

뒤로 물러나서 도망치더라도, 상대의 전진을 막을 수 없다면 언젠간 따라잡힐 수밖에 없다.

Then we should come to wrestling, and we should take the opponent's leg if we can.

그러므로 그때 너는 레슬링으로 승부를 봐야 한다. 가능하다면 하단태클을 걸어라.

But in doing so we should sink directly over our feet,

하지만 허리를 굽히는 대신, 다리를 깊이 구부리면서 그대로 자세를 낮춰 태클을 걸어야 한다.

for if we lean over too much, we will certainly fall.

갑옷을 입은 상태에서 허리를 너무 구부리면 넘어지기 쉬우니까.

And here note one thing above all, namely that before you decide to fight, you should make yourself as strong as your opponent.

무엇보다 중요한 것은, 싸우기 전에 네가 상대와 대등한 수준으로 힘을 키워야 한다는 것이다.

And if it is not so in reality, you should firmly believe that it is, if not, you should not fight.

그게 현실에서 불가능하다면 적어도 힘에서 밀리지 않는다는 믿음을 가져야 하고, 아니면 전투에 나서지 말아야 한다.

For with these arms the weaker ones always lose, or those who are weaker in working.

갑주전투에서는 언제나 힘센 사람이 이긴다. 아니면 전투에서 약한 힘을 내는 사람이 지거나.

For when a person's spirit is lacking or he greatly fears the powers of the opponent, his physical powers are much weakened.

투지를 잃거나 상대의 힘을 두려워할 때, 그 사람의 신체능력이 크게 약화되기 때문이다.

Hence we should not fight in white armor unless we are as strong as our adversary is, or believe we are,

그러므로 네가 상대에게 힘에서 밀리지 않거나, 아니면 적어도 그렇다는 믿음을 가질 수 없으면, 갑주전투에 나서지 말아야 한다.

for if the opponent puch us one step, we will think he is pushing us two or more.

상대의 힘에 겁을 먹은 사람은 한 걸음 밀려났을 때 두 걸음 이상 밀려났다고 느끼게 될 것이니까.

Even if he is stronger than we are, we should proceed with clear and calm spirit, as if we were equal or better.

실제로 상대가 너보다 힘이 세다고 해도, 너는 너의 힘이 상대와 대등하거나 더 강한 것처럼 침착하고 또렷한 정신으로 대적해야 한다.

And to do this or to resist pushes by strong men, we should artfully push them,

또한, 그러기 위해서 너는 힘센 상대를 기술로 밀어붙일 수 있어야 한다.

Some use their pollaxe crosswise with two hands when they are in armor, placing it across the opponent's chest so they can push him.

예를 들어, 갑주전투에서 어떤 이들은 폴액스 창대를 가로로 들어서 상대의 가슴에 대고 밀어붙이기도 한다.

In such a case we can turn a little to our side to displace the opponent's body and take him from behind.

그런 상황에서 너는 옆으로 몸을 돌려 상대의 뒤를 잡을 수 있다.

In this manner of fighting, at least on foot, large men have a great advantage over small ones,

for large bodies have the greatest power and can deliver great blows.

Also we cannot push large men owing to their weight and size.

And even if many blows can be deliverd at them, what good is it if they are armed in white?

For the principle is the same: two unclothed men will fight with fists, or men in white armor with pollaxes,

도보전투에서 판금갑옷을 입고 폴액스를 들고 싸우는 것은 예를 들면 길거리의 주먹싸움 같은 것이다.

but the one who delivers stronger blows at the opponent will prevail.

상대를 더 강하게 때릴 수 있는 쪽이 이긴다.

Yet when we are lightly armored, any small force is enough to kill the enemy.

하지만 경무장한 상태에서의 싸움에서는 작은 힘으로도 상대를 죽이기에 충분하다.

When mounted knights are in white armor or are protected everywhere with defensive arms, everyone must press upon the opponent, as has been seen above, particularly when the opponent delivers a blow.

전신판금갑옷을 입은 기사들의 마상전투에서는, 앞에서 설명한 대로, 특히 상대가 공격을 가해 올 때, 상대를 압박해야 한다.

For example: if the opponent delivers a thrust, right-hand blow, or left-hand,

예를 들어, 상대가 먼저 찌르기나, 우측베기나, 좌측베기를 던지면

at that moment we should push our horse forward to join our right or left arm to the opponent's arm,

그 순간 우리는 말을 몰아 앞으로 달려들면서 왼손이나 오른손으로 상대의 무기를 든 손을 붙잡아야 한다.

so that we can take his weapon.

그렇게 상대의 무기를 빼앗을 수 있다.

If the opponent's horse turns its back to us,

we can at once strike hard with our pommel on the back of our opponent's head,

너는 즉시 상대의 뒤통수를 칼자루로 강하게 후려찍을 수 있다.

for if we strike there strongly, we quickly throw him over the horse's neck,

강하게 때리면 상대가 의식을 잃고 낙마하게 만들 수 있을 것이다.

or if we do not want to do this, or cannot,

그렇게 할 수 없거나 다른 방법을 쓰고 싶을 때는

we can catch his neck with our warhammer or some other haft weapon, making him fall over the horse's back,

워해머 같은 자루 무기를 목에 걸어 당겨서 낙마시킬 수 있다.

or else passing by the opponent's side, going in the same direction as he is,

아니면 옆으로 쫓아가서

we can place our left arm on his left at the elbow from behind, and push him forward, and then also we can seize his neck or shoulder with our right hand on the right side, pulling him so that he falls to the left side.

왼손으로 상대의 왼쪽 팔꿈치를 미는 동시에 오른손으로 상대의 목이나 어깨를 붙잡아 당겨서 상대를 낙마시킬 수 있다.

If the opponent seizes us this way, we should draw our left arm backward, and use it to seize him by the loins, turning our whole body the same way over the saddle or over the buttocks.

만약 상대가 너에게 이 기술을 시도한다면, 상반신 전체를 왼쪽으로 돌리면서 왼팔 팔꿈치를 뒤쪽으로 당겨서 왼팔로 상대의 골반을 붙잡는 식으로 대응해야 한다.

When fighting in single combat, we have plenty of time and space to see places that are unarmored and can target them.

일대일 결투에서 우리는 상대의 갑옷 틈새의 위치를 파악할 시간적, 공간적 여유가 충분히 있다.

In massed warfare, the fighting is thick and everyone helps their comrades against enemies, falling on them on every side, so there is no opportunity to see every uncovered body part.

반면에 전장의 집단 전투는 수많은 사람이 한곳에 뒤엉키며, 누구나 동료를 도와서 적을 공격하려 하고, 따라서 사방에 적이 있기 때문에 갑옷 틈새를 전부 확인할 시간이 없다.

So in single combat we should be provided with a strong and large horse,

그러므로 특히 일대일 결투에서 너는 크고 힘센 말을 준비해야 한다.

strong enough to push the opponent, and large enough to overwhelm him,

상대의 말을 뒤로 밀어붙일 만큼 강하고, 기수를 짓누를 수 있는 높은 위치를 제공하는 말을.

for the one who sits higher can deliver more powerful blows.

왜냐면 높은 곳에 있는 기사가 더 강한 공격을 가할 수 있으니까.

And if the knight knows what he is doing, he can often attack the opponent's visor with the tip of his sword, provided it is slender, and flat rather than round.

그리고 숙련된 기사는 얇고 뾰족한 칼끝으로 면갑의 눈구멍을 찌를 수 있으니까.

Chapter 16: Which sorts of weapons to choose for fighting with strong men and which with weak ones

16장: 힘이 강한 사람이나 약한 사람을 상대할 때 선택해야 하는 무기의 종류

Against strong men we should choose small, light weapons and spacious places,

너보다 힘이 강한 상대와 싸울 때, 너는 작고 가벼운 무기와 넓은 장소를 선택해야 한다.

but if they are weak we should do the reverse,

그리고 힘이 약한 상대와 싸울 때는 크고 무거운 무기와 좁은 장소를 선택해야 한다.

A weak man should take care that the strong one does not close with him without paying a high price.

힘이 약한 사람은 강한 상대가 손해 없이 근접하지 못하게 만들어야 한다.

Similarly, the strong one should see that the weak one does not have the opportunity to escape from him.

마찬가지로 힘이 강한 사람은 약한 상대에게 도망칠 기회를 주지 말아야 한다.

Against opponents who know little, we should work so that they uncover some part of their body.

너의 상대가 경험이 부족하다면, 너는 상대 스스로 방어를 풀도록 유도해야 한다.

Some people will always try to strike the opponent, whether the target is armored or unarmored,

상대가 갑옷을 입고 있건 맨몸이건 상관 없이, 때릴 수 있으면 일단 때리려고 하는 사람들이 있다.

and this is especially true of those who are bold or crude,

무식하거나 용감한 사람들이 특히 그런다.

so when we offer them our armored body-parts, they discharge their blows,

그런 사람들한테 갑옷으로 보호된 부위를 들이밀면, 그놈들은 방어를 풀고 일단 때리고 볼 것이고,

and it becomes easier for us to harm them.

동시에 이쪽에서 공격해서 피해를 입히기 쉬워질 것이다.
