George Floyd laid to rest in Houston after emotional funeral.
Tuesday the world said its final goodbye to George Floyd, more than two weeks after he was killed when a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds.
The long goodbye, fittingly, ended in his hometown of Houston. Stef Manisero was there for the private service. She describes it as filled with love, hope, and calls for change.
It was a day to celebrate the life of George Floyd. George Floyd the father, George Floyd the son, George Floyd the brother, George Floyd the friend.
"I thank God for giving me my personal superhero," said his sister, LaTonya Floyd.
After several public memorials, this one was for the people who knew Floyd.
"There will be no more 8 minutes and 46 seconds of injustice and the mistreatment of African American men at the hands of the laws of this nation," said Sheila Jackson Lee, the U.S. Representative for Texas' 18th congressional district.
The service was also for people who now feel like they knew Floyd.
Former Vice President Joe Biden met with Floyd's family privately Monday and sent a video message for the church Tuesday.
"Now is the time for racial justice. That's the answer we must give to our children when they ask why," said Biden. "Because when there's justice for George Floyd, we will truly be on our way to justice in America, and then, as you said Gianna, your daddy will have changed the world."
Talk of changing the world filled the church, just as it's filling our streets, nationwide.
"And while the world has been shaken and awakened by three words that your dearly beloved George Floyd spoke, I leave you one word, his final word, which was breathe. And breathe is not passive, no sir, no ma'am. Breathe is active," said Ivy McGregor with the Fountain of Praise Church.
While his family has said its final farewell, it hopes this day is just the beginning.
"Right now I want justice for my brother, Big Floyd. Everyone knows who Big Floyd is now," said Philonise Floyd.
Rev. Al Sharpton delivered Floyd's eulogy. He called for a change in policing, saying officers need to be put in jail when they break the law.
"If four black cops had done to one white what was done to George, they wouldn't have to teach no new lessons, they wouldn't have to get corporations and get money," Sharpton said. "They would send them to jail. And until we know the price for black life is the same as the price of white life, we're going to keep coming back to these situations over and over again."
"We've come a long way, but you have to understand how far we have to go," Sharpton said.
People in Houston and all across the world share that same feeling. They feel this beginning, they feel this hope that we, as a nation, are on the cusp of change.
But they also know for real change to happen, this movement, and these conversations, can't end today.
Rest in peace...
