 YOUNG South Korean superstar pianist Yunchan Lim (pictured), who’s still only 21, went down a storm on his Proms debut last year, with a performance of Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto. He’s back this year to play Rachmaninov’s Fourth Piano Concerto with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. The ambitious and technically demanding work was premiered in Philadelphia in 1927, and two other musical visions from the New World complete tonight’s concert, John Adams’s The Chairman Dances from his opera Nixon in China, and Luciano Berio’s Sinfonia.

젊은 한국인 슈퍼스타 피아니스트 임윤찬(사진)은 아직 21세에 불과하지만, 작년 프롬스 데뷔 무대에서 베토벤의 황제 협주곡을 연주하며 큰 반향을 일으켰다. 올해 그는 버밍엄 시립 교향악단과 함께 라흐마니노프의 피아노 협주곡 4번을 연주하기 위해 다시 무대에 오른다. 이 야심차고 기술적으로 까다로운 곡은 1927년 필라델피아에서 초연되었으며, 오늘 밤의 공연은 미국을 배경으로 한 또 다른 두 곡과 함께 완성된다. 바로 존 아담스의 오페라 차이나의 닉슨 중 의장(議長)은 춤춘다와 루치아노 베리오의 신포니아다.
